How many shifts a month do I have to work?

 

PGY-1 – 180-190 hours per block (mix of 9 and 12 hour shifts)
PGY-2 – 180-190 hours per block (mix of 9 and 12 hour shifts)
PGY-3 – 170-180 hours per block (mix of 9 and 12 hour shifts)
PGY-4 – 160-170 hours per block (mix of 9 and 12 hour shifts)

   
 

Where are the current residents from?

 

We currently have residents from 17 different osteopathic medical schools from the West Coast to the East.

   

 

Where have the graduates gone?

 

We graduated our fourth class of EM residents June 2007. One of our residents went on to practice in New Jersey, one is working for a local hospital in Allentown, one joined our EMS Fellowship at Lehigh Valley Hospital and the remaining 3 joined our Emergency Medicine Faculty. Past graduates have joined toxicology fellowships in Arizona and California. Another joined the John Hopkins Disaster Fellowship. We have graduates working in Oregon, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Delaware, Connecticut, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.

   

 

How are didactics provided?

 

Interns meet daily for morning report and later in the day for an afternoon lecture. Medicine Grand rounds occur once per week. Additionally, there is a pathology conference held twice per month and a 3-hour OMM session. EM Residents meet weekly for a 5-hour didactic session. Visiting speakers from all over the country enhance this with a 2-hour lecture monthly. EM Journal club meets once per month.

   

 

What is the call frequency?

 

Call in the ED is on an as needed basis. Call coverage in also provided to the ED from certain off-service rotations to help ease the load from the residents scheduled on the emergency medicine rotation. The call person is only used in the event an emergency medicine resident calls out ill.

Is the internship linked?

 

There are currently 16 slots in our internship – 12 are linked into the EM program and the other 4 are traditional rotating slots.

   
 

What are the rotations you do as interns?

 

The EM linked interns currently are scheduled for 14 weeks of medicine, 4 weeks of ICU, 8 weeks of surgery, 4 weeks of family practice, 4 weeks of pediatrics, 2 weeks of nights (3– 2 week blocks), 4 weeks OB/GYN, and 8 weeks emergency medicine. Traditional interns are scheduled for 20 weeks medicine, 4 weeks ICU, 4 weeks surgery, 4 weeks of family practice, 2 weeks of nights (3-2 week blocks), 4 weeks of emergency medicine and 10 weeks selective .

   

 

What are the rotations you do as residents?

 

There are 18 months of emergency medicine and an additional 2 of pediatric emergency medicine. Additional rotations include – neurology, trauma, toxicology, ICU, anesthesia, EMS, administration/research, and radiology.

   

 

What are the differences b/w Muhlenberg and CC? ie pt numbers, acuity, trauma?

 

The department at LVH-Cedar Crest & I-78 operates the state's first Level I Trauma Center. It is one of four Level I trauma centers in Pennsylvania with additional qualifications in pediatric trauma. The emergency department at Cedar Crest has over 50,000 patient visits per year. LVH-Muhlenberg is a community hospital located about 15 miles from the Cedar Crest site. The emergency department at this site has over 35,000 patient visits a year. More information about the departments is located in the About LVH portion of our web site.
