The Emergency
Medical Services Fellowship is based out Lehigh Valley Hospital – Muhlenberg.
This rapidly expanding campus is one of three within the
greater Allentown and Bethlehem area. The fellow will spend
time throughout the Lehigh
Valley Hospital and Health Network's three sites.
This fellowship is designed to prepare the candidate to successfully
complete the certificate of added qualification in EMS as
offered by the American College of Osteopathic Emergency
Physicians. More importantly, we strive to work with the
Fellow and allow some flexibility in the program design.
We feel we are uniquely qualified to provide that type of
opportunity and experience.
This twelve-month program will provide education
in the areas of management, leadership and quality assurance
of EMS organizations. The Fellow will be actively involved with EMS air and ground units as well as local pre-hospital training programs. Time will be spent developing
and enhancing community relationships with regards to injury
prevention and disaster preparedness. The Fellow will take
part in institutional, regional, state and national
organizations as they relate to EMS. Currently, the staff
at Lehigh Valley Hospital is actively involved in these organizations
and many of them serve as regional medical directors for
ground and air emergency service providers. Administrative aspects of EMS and providing
education to the pre-hospital personnel and the community will also be
emphasized.
The EMS Fellowship also has opportunities
for training in the areas of bioterrorism, tactical EMS,
critical stress debriefing and mass casualty incidents.
The program is further enhanced by its relationship
with the George
E. Moerkirk Emergency Medicine Institute.
This facility has a dedicated faculty of three coordinators and two administrative assistants
running a full-time training site. Multiple classrooms with
advanced audiovisuals, a METI
® human patient simulator
lab, several breakout areas, and mobile human patient simulators
are just a few of the incredible features of GEM-EMI. The
reputation of EMI speaks for itself, training nearly 10,000
clients a year in a complete selection of standard pre-hospital
courses as well as site specific training programs. It is
also home to a paramedic training program in conjunction
with Lehigh Carbon Community
College.
This center will further enhance the Fellows training experience.
