The commitment demonstrated by the 39 full-time, board-certified attending physicians is unsurpassed. In addition to their dedication to educating residents, faculty members are involved in activities, including:
- Past and present memberships in state and national osteopathic and allopathic emergency medicine committees (ACEP,PaACEP,POMA,CORD,SAEM,ACOEP)
- Board memberships, including the Emergency Medicine Foundation and immediate past board member of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP)
- Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network is a clinical campus of the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine and all of the attendings hold academic faculty positions there and at various other medical colleges.
- Currently the department of emergency medicine includes 20 osteopathic faculty members certified in emergency medicine. These faculty members hold academic faculty positions at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Allopathically certified emergency medicine physicians also participate as faculty in the osteopathic program. The faculty's devotion to emergency medicine research is a vital component that makes the Muhlenberg program unique.
Through lectures and clinical training, residents develop a practice style shaped by the faculty's expertise in many areas, including airway management, pediatric emergency medicine and trauma resuscitations. Faculty will become resident mentors, and senior residents will assist in being mentors for their fellow junior residents as the program evolves.
Muhlenberg emergency medicine faculty present abstracts at various emergency medicine scientific assemblies, receive research grants, publish their work and make oral and poster presentations at ACEP and ACOEP annual conferences.
Beginning their first year of training, residents are involved in a number of ongoing research studies. Faculty research relationships are continually growing and span local, regional and national groups. In addition, there is ongoing leading edge research with nationally recognized emergency departments of other medical institutions.
